ARTIST STATEMENT

Ko MamaTane Ia

The Polynesian body has been constructed and consumed since first contact by the Europeans, sexulised, demonised and re gendered through the notion of what genitalia you might possess. MamaTane is neither male or female, the body allowing a shared  space for all genealogical material… I am at once male and female, I am the past, I am the present, I am the future.

ARTIST STATEMENT

A workshop series working young  queer Polynesian designers in Campbell Town just outside of Sydney, exploring kaupapa driven frock….fashion with meaning, with mana. The moving image was one of the first collaborations I did with my son  Salvador who shot and edited the work, mentored by his uncle, with my daughters  school friend providing the music. J’son included his siblings to help tell the story of Pele,  with his cousin for make up, personified by the lovely Tongan super model( like actually)  Diamond Langi. Bayvick Lawerance has gone onto to design his own label and brought in his stunning cousin and I pulled a favour with a Pacific Sister and now fabulous artist Angela Tiatia. A real family affair…cos that’s how we role in the Pacific when we are marginalised, when we have to create our own spaces, we work with love and the spirit….it will protect us.
